Creating Inspiring Gardens

About Me

Gaia Goddess was created in response to the many people who asked for my advice and assistance with their gardens over the past 30+ years. It began as a community gardening effort and blossomed to include others I'd met while involved in other activities.

I earned my Colorado Gardening Certificate in 2007 through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension training, and I’ve maintained my Master Gardener credential since that time through educational and volunteer activities. This does not in any way imply I'm a personal representative for CSU any time other than when I’m actively engaged with volunteer duties for the CSU Extension. It does, however, allow me access to the latest research-based information. I’ve become part of the Boulder County Diagnostics Team, attending seminars to increase my ability to diagnose plant problems. My best and favorite resource is the entire community of Master Gardeners.

In addition to my gardening life, I am a consulting astrologer, in practice for over 40 years. There was a time in Europe when no one ever considered planting or harvesting crops without astrological input. That, by the way, is the origin of The Farmer’s Almanac. I also have utilized my voice performance major through singing in the Boulder Chorale, which I have done for many years. Additionally, with my husband, Robert Diehl, I co-taught the course, Dynamics of Intimate Relationships, at Naropa University, and founded the Colorado Association for Psychotherapeutic Astrology (CAPA). I was a founding member of Boulder Friends of Jung, and served on the Board as Program Committee Chair and Hospitality Chair, as well as serving on the Editing Committee.

I've found over the years that nothing can bring people together in such a purely enjoyable way quite like gardening (and animals). People often have the attitude that they could never get as involved with gardening as they end up becoming. And there's really no way at all to envision how much a person will enjoy caring for a garden, to the extent that it no longer qualifies as "work". The thrill of bringing such beauty into existence is downright addictive - in the most positive sense!

My objective

My objective is to coach you in establishing exactly the garden you desire according to your financial means, aesthetic preferences, physical capacities and time limitations. I will provide assistance with your garden design, plant selection and placement, ongoing plant care, plant replacement, diagnosing problems, and container gardening. I offer ongoing coaching for one, two, or three years, or intermittent on-call assistance, to ensure your garden becomes well-established.

About the photos

The top photo was my first garden. The Clematis climbing the brick wall obscured a number of unsightly flaws in the brick. Plants are always a good way to deal with unattractive situations.

Bianca, my Maltese, likes to lie in the soft ground covers while she supervises me. This one is Ranunculus, which is best in small areas that naturally contain it. (That’s code for saying it can be invasive.)

Home entries are especially important for creating a welcoming feeling. This is how my own entry looked at the end of its first Summer.

I’m particularly fond of daylilies, and I have plenty of them! This one is Ruffled Apricot, the Stout Silver Medal winner in 1982. I’ve grown daylilies in pots on my deck for years.

My favorites

I have several catalog plant supply companies I like to recommend. Although I prefer to support local greenhouses and plant nurseries, they don’t always have what I want. These are some of my very favorites:
